This bird is endemic to the Canary Islands, Azores and Madeira (regions of Spain & Portugal) in the region known as Macaronesia in the eastern Atlantic Ocean.
The species is common in captivity and a number of colour varieties have been bred.
The bird is named after the Canary Islands, not the other way around. The islandsβ name is derived from the Latin name canariae insulae (βislands of dogsβ) used by Arnobius, referring to the large dogs kept by the inhabitants of the islands (the Guanche people).
